Exhibition of Prints, Drawings and Paintings by
Peter Bright
150 Building, West Buckland School

Monday 6th June – Friday 1st July 2011

Old images and ideas revisited and recycled – re-executed in print and paint. A body of work based around “Beauty and the Beast” a classic tale of love, rejection and prejudice, where the beauty is the beast and the beast is the beauty. An allegory, a symbolic representation or a metaphor for my feelings towards ART.

I have always loved the idea of Mail Art – the forerunner of the Internet!

Here is a newspaper clipping about the exhibition at West Buckland school. To see larger image click here

I hate art clubs – I’m anti-social

Creating artists networks can sometimes be a pointless exercise. In the social sciences a social group has been defined as two or more humans who interact with one another,  share similar characteristics and collectively have a sense of unity within their interests. Theorists are a wary of definitions which stress the importance of interdependence or objective similarity. Instead, for researchers in the social identity tradition “a group is defined in terms of those who identify themselves as members of the group”.  The idea of sharing experiences, gallery contacts and clients etc. sounds like a very good idea on the surface. The reality is actually rather disappointing.  Social groups come in a myriad of sizes and varieties. For example, a society can be viewed as a large social group. Artists are no different from any other group of people and have an underlying self serving agenda,   they are simply out there to make a fast profit and steal contacts and ideas – well at least the majority are…

Here is an article stolen from Sitemaps-xml.com: New Art Groups Fail – #marketing – promote your art

Often artists’ groups have a core of members who initiate activities and support the rest of the group. Not only is it important to support new groups, it is important for these founding members to fully understand the structures and reasons for creating new groups. They must be asked ‘Why are you doing this?’ and ‘Are there other groups around that already fulfill your needs and aims?’ Creating new artist groups/collectives could be counterproductive and create an even more fragmented environment. It is important that a robust armature is created for a network to succeed. If this is achieved then it would be a formidable and powerful organisation.

A mentoring scheme which enables artists and crafts people to get access to strategies and processes needed to create successful art and business practice would be highly beneficial to individuals and groups. North Devon Web can help you with setting up an artist website and help you to promote your art.

Our skills are at the ‘start up’ phase of businesses and organizations, where the creativity of the entrepreneur or group is at its most inventive and vulnerable. We find the energy that is created very infectious but we also know that this enthusiasm gradually dies and needs ‘mothering’ to take it to the next growth phase. To achieve sustainability is key, and we have wide and varied experience of achieving this both in a traditional business environment and in pioneering innovations.

North Devon Web belongs to a network of websites that host in a green way. North Devon Web is helping to prevent the release of 2,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year by hosting on ‘Green Servers’ – as a result, the network’s energy efficiency is equal to planting about 2,390 acres of trees, not driving 6.1 million miles, or removing 510 cars from the road. Is your art a brand ?

Adapted form an original post here: Building a brand loyalty

The first impressions you get from your site’s visitors are critical. It is important to check what image and brand signals your website gives out. What does your Art Website say? A brand relies on continuity, clients need to have confidence in you and like to know that your company has a passion or belief – above all they need to know you are not simply in the game to make a quick profit and then disappear. Building a brand loyalty is paramount to continuing success. This is essential if you are a struggling artist.

There is no point in delivering the same product as the competition unless you come up with a strategy that makes you the brand leader.  Don’t convince yourself that a catchy gimmick  is going to be strong enough to get you to the top, the whole thing depends on building a culture around you, your art, your product, your service and the dream – people have to believe in you.

North Devon Web can help you with setting up a small business or artists website and help you to prove your brand.

Making notes on paintings – WordPress app

WordPress app – notes on a remembered painting – stolen from www.thiswindowuk.com

Notes on Painting :

  1. The act of being creative is a love hate thing – The Beauty and The Beast someone fetch a priest (ref. David Bowie).
  2. Action Painting – Pollock. Print dribbled paint.
  3. Soft pink landscapes (1980) Richard Hamilton A landscape of soft focus and toilet paper – a turgid landscape. Collotype and Screenprint – text and image. A remembered exhibition.
  4. Stoned Moon Series’ was Rauschenberg’s ambitious response to the American space program and the landmark Apollo 11 mission that put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface in July 1969.
  5. Being overpowered by a Rothko exhibition.
  6. Being overpowered by a Gerhard Richter exhibition.
Below: WordPress app – tested on a train – post first published on sitemaps-xml.com

The WordPress app is a handy little tool, the stats data you see is the same data you see when at your blog’s web dashboard. This includes ‘Views by Country’ and ‘Top Posts & Pages’. If your blog is a self-hosted blog you can enable the stats in the app by installing the free Jetpack plugin into your web dashboard.

I struggle with this app – but I like it and is it is perfect for making notes on the go.

The WordPress app has traditionally been a twitchy thing and unfortunately it still is when using some blog templates – images disappear and code becomes meaningless spaghetti. The best use for this app is as an optimizing tool, using the stat capability. If you want to post something on the go then just use the text fields and ignore inserting media. Having tested this app on an iPhone and a Sony Xperia, the android version worked better for me.

The post below was created using the WordPress app on a Sony Xperia:

Just been to a house in Wimbledon and on the wall was one of my paintings. An interesting rediscovery after a long train journey from North Devon.

An oil of a knife, a pair of scissors, a spoon on a tiled surface. I must have painted it about ten years ago. I’d forgotten all about it.

Nobody answers spam – promote your Art

Marketing you art is really propaganda You push out information about your creativity to galleries and clients, you exaggerate (maybe) your success, you get the crowd to believe in you.

You could employ a scatter gun approach to your art marketing strategy by trying a little of everything but this is the pathetic ploy of a desperate person.

If you target 100,000 people with unsolicited emails you will probably create a negative image for your business – bought email lists are not as effective as somebody saying “I’m interested in your Artworks”. Have a look in your own inbox for proof this approach does not work. Do you deal with the unsolicited direct (spamming) marketers and do you trust them? Do you read all the junk mail that drops onto your doormat? If you send out of 10.000 emails you might get a response from less than 1% of them – there is a possibility you might not get any quality leads at all. You have to be selective.

What is the best marketing strategy for your Art

Information is power and sharing information increases your web and marketing presence leading ultimately to more sales.  North Devon Web can install, manage and maintain your WordPress blog for you and they can do all this on one of their green servers. A WordPress blog is another marketing strategy used for increasing a site’s relevance, by second guessing what people search for when they are using a search engine, by using effective keywords in your blog posts.

Verity Ilfracombe – Bad public art?

Verity stands triumphantly, defending Ilfracombe’s harbour – justice and truth. The truth sadly is Ilfracombe (a seaside town) is dying, the ‘kiss me quick’ tourist trade that came down the M5 has gone elsewhere or stays at home.

Damien Hirst has done more than anybody to help kickstart the regeneration of North Devon, sadly his genius will not be enough – he can’t to do it on his own.

If you go into his bar/restaurant a few metres away there are a couple of smaller versions of Verity standing either side of the bar – well worth a look.

Why is most public art crap?

The term public art is especially significant within the art world, amongst curators, commissioning bodies and practitioners of public art, to whom it signifies a particular working practice, often with implications of site specificity. The need to display art in …Continue reading →

The problems of fragmentation and confusion that exist within more traditional art practices, such as painting and sculpture (in the broadest possible milieu) are mirrored in new art practices. Within these technological and new media categories, diverse concepts and imagery has been lumped together to form a hodgepodge of non-related methodologies and artworks.
What is this direction?

The meshing together of processes, unrelated imagery and the breaking down of barriers cannot be seen as a shortcut to intellectual credibility. The dedicated thought process that goes with the creative procedure should be one of intense reasoning.

The ability to grow an idea into a business need not be such a difficult task. Entrepreneurs sometimes become blind to the obvious, convinced that their vision is the only possible route towards success. The entrepreneur’s inability to seek help and let go of their creation is sometimes the reason why they fail, avoiding or dismissing processes which offer better methods and practices. In other words they do not seek advice or they do not take advice – which may provided them the tools and techniques that could noticeably improve efficiency or growth, which in turn can lead to faster return on investment and increased profits.

Drawing from 1978 – exhibited in Illfracombe as part of a major event

IMGP0589

The image above is a drawing I did in 1978, which is part lithograph and part sketch in oils. It is now part of an exhibition in the coastal town of Ilfracombe.

Over this weekend, in the Landmark Pavilion, Sea Ilfracombe will be hosting a major event, which will include exhibitions from professional artists, as well as artwork from Ilfracombe’s schools and community college.
